Graphical Editor - Room Generation

Available from JDR-Bot 4.16.

The generator prepares rooms and links; you then write the story, events and conditions. It is available on Web and Desktop under Tools → Generate rooms…. Generation runs locally in the editor, on your computer.

Getting started

  1. Choose a room count and a structure.
  2. Adjust branches, loops, dead ends, minimum distance and endings.
  3. Click Generate: the result opens in a new tab, even when your main scenario is empty.
  4. Fill in the rooms and test the route.
  5. Click Import into my scenario, then connect the sections to suit your story.

All import checkboxes start checked; clear any items you do not want to keep. You can also close the generated tab or try another generation without replacing your main scenario.

Choosing a structure

Structure Route
Linear One path with one-way travel and a single ending room.
Interactive fiction Decisions, parallel paths and shared passages, with no return loops. Three ending rooms by default.
Dungeon An irregular cave to explore, with corridors, junctions, detours and dead ends.
Hub A central room after one or two introductory rooms. Exploration branches allow return travel; final branches are one-way from the centre.
Maze A grid with passages between neighbouring cells, circuits and dead ends.
Loop A main circuit that can be explored in both directions; endings sit on exits outside it.

The number of ending rooms can be changed for every structure except Linear. An ending room has no generated exit and is marked Ending in the graph. It does not automatically trigger victory or defeat: add the event that ends the game yourself. One room can describe several outcomes depending on variables.

Minimum distance counts the rooms on the shortest route to the nearest ending, including the entrance and ending. Internal model rooms are not counted. Check the route again after connecting your rooms. If the settings are too restrictive, add more rooms or reduce endings, loops or distance.

By default, rooms are empty and navigation uses their choices and the usual command, for example go salle_gen_2. Create buttons is optional and starts unchecked. It adds buttons to destination rooms without duplicating them on choices.

The options below are independent and start unchecked. They fill ordinary rooms only: model callers, model exits and model contents are left for the author to complete. A passage from an ordinary room into a model is included in the list.

Exits are:

[[exit_vertical]]

[[exit_vertical]] produces a list such as “- North” and “- East”. [[exit_horizontal]] produces “North / East”. The French equivalents are [[sortie_verticale]] and [[sortie_horizontale]]. Both sets of markers are recognised; directions use the generation language.

Directions follow the original plan, even after graph reorganisation. A dead end includes the way back; an ending with no choices lists nothing. These markers are replaced during generation: the resulting text can then be edited like any other room text.

What would you like to do?

[[choice_vertical]]

[[choice_vertical]] lists the aliases on separate lines; [[choice_horizontal]] separates them with “/”. French equivalents: [[choix_vertical]] and [[choix_horizontal]].

The list follows the current choices during play and in the editor preview: edited aliases and newly added choices are included. A choice without an alias uses its position in the declared list. Hidden choices are omitted, but numbers stay stable, so a list may show “1, 2, 3, 5”. Players can use these numbers directly or with go.

Using models

Check Use models (optional) to include models already defined in your scenario. Add a model and Add basic rooms let you mix them. Weights control relative frequency, without guaranteeing an exact number of each model.

Model contents are preserved. Complete each call's parameters, then connect exits and links marked To connect before playing. Several models on one line create separate rooms that need connecting.

Regenerating, saving and sharing

Generation settings, next to the tabs, reopens the result's settings. The same seed gives the same result with identical settings, models and JDR-Bot behaviour. New seed tries another route. The latest settings are kept between Web and Desktop sessions.

Save / share generation produces a code to copy; Load a code restores its settings and models. The code keeps the initial configuration, not your edits or media files. Save the tab as a .jdrproj to keep edited text, choices and positions.

Generation stays local during collaboration. The Web automatic draft keeps the main scenario: save generated tabs before closing or reloading the page.
